Photography Training with Lindsay Dobson
When it comes to learning, it can be hard to know who to approach. Not all trainers are created equally and it’s important you research the credentials of whoever is guiding you.
At the most basic level, you should expect that your instructor can demonstrate expertise in the kind of photography you want to learn. If you’re hoping to gain a photography qualification or distinction, seek advice from an assessor who has been through the qualification process themselves at the highest level. Awarding bodies include the Royal Photographic Society, the British Institute of Professional Photography, the Master Photographers Association, and The Societies. Having achieved Fellowship level within the BIPP and The Societies, mentoring and training is part of what I do.
I’ve won many industry awards and distinctions in subjects ranging from people portraiture, pet photography, wildlife photography, fine art photography, documentary photography, street photography through to landscape photography. Please visit my Photography Industry Awards section and my Photography Press area to see more.
Our training consists of portfolio reviews and half day (one to one) skill-building sessions for beginners to intermediate photographers. Please note that aside from our portfolio reviews, our training is limited to amateur photographers.
Skills training is tailored to your individual needs, but our most popular workshops are our coastal photography half day modules and wildlife skill-builder sessions. Aside from helping you to understand your camera settings, you’ll be taught how to create balanced and creative compositions - something even the more experienced photographers can struggle with at times. Simply pick up the phone for current availability, pricing, and an informal chat. Our face to face sessions take place in West Sussex at localities close to my base in Storrington.
One of the fastest and most helpful ways of taking your work to the next level is to invest in a portfolio review. Many of our students start with a review and then progress to a face to face practical session.
portfolio reviews
Having our photographs assessed by an experienced professional can be one of the best ways to kick-start our photographic journey. A review can help to teach us how to critique our own images – a vital part of self-improvement
A portfolio review is perfect for anybody wanting to ‘benchmark’ their photographic journey. In which case the images you submit for critique can be in any subject, or across a variety of subjects.
Arranging a review is easy:
The first step is to think carefully about the images you intend to include in your review
For a generalised portfolio review the photographs can be in any subject, or across a variety of subjects. They don’t all have to be your best images, and in fact sending some of your ‘problem’ photographs can be very helpful. We’d recommend you send 20 to 25 images (you’ll receive instructions from us on how to send your files)
If you’re moving towards a qualification/distinction the photographs will need to sit together as a coherent body of work (make sure you thoroughly read the submission guidelines of whichever Institute you intend to submit through, as the rules can vary a little). We’d advise you send your panel images and 5 spares
Payment is via bank transfer - pick up the phone or drop us an email and we’ll then pass you the payment details. Once we’ve received your fee you’ll receive some instructions on how to prepare and send your work
We’ll aim to schedule your review session within 2 to 3 weeks of receiving your files. After examining your work we’ll arrange a time for an in-depth discussion which will last approximately 45 minutes. Portfolio reviews normally take place over the telephone or Zoom
PORTFOLIO REVIEW FEE: £85.00
